#TalkingAAC Keynote Is Available!
Over a year ago, Racheal Langley and the steering committee for #TalkingAAC conference in East Lansing, Michigan invited me to give a keynote talk at their 2019 conference. Though unsure at the time what I would share, I said yes. Last summer found me sneaking away from home life and teaching responsibilities to write, edit, and write some more. The preparation stretched me as a writer. With the conference deadline, I couldn’t wait until I felt like writing. I scheduled care for Nathaniel and had to write. I did the same to practice the delivery.
Sharing our AAC story at the conference in October was the culmination of years as an AAC family. Prior to the Covid19 pandemic outbreak, I was accepting opportunities to share my keynote and additional material in person. I made a decision to record the talk in a studio instead. Offering it online fills both the need for family stories about AAC and the need to keep everyone healthy. I am delighted to share our journey here.
The forty-three minute presentation can be rented through Vimeo on Demand below. Streaming is available for forty-eight hours after purchase. An accompanying resource list for the talk can be found here. It is password protected and the password can be found in the video.
Praise for AAC: Nathaniel’s Best Chance at Life:
"Kim shares a powerful message of conviction and determination; and it's one that will benefit both parents and professionals. It highlights the partnership between families and therapist, and the sheer grit that it takes to support the voice of a complex child."
Rachael Langley, M.S., CCC-SLP
"Kim’s insight and thoughtfulness in sharing Nathaniel’s journey with AAC has challenged me to improve my practice. What she presents is not is taught in grad school, but should absolutely be required for professionals who support AAC. This presentation is also wonderful for families/caregivers, specifically addressing presumed competence and comprehensive literacy instruction."
Sarah Gregory, M.S., CCC-SLP
"Every professional working with children who have complex bodies and challenging communication needs should have a conversation with Kim. Through her lived experience as a mother, Kim shares insight that provides empathy and support for parents, while helping professionals understand the realities of daily life loving a child with special needs. I have deeply appreciated my conversations with Kim and gained insight which impacts my interaction and support for our families. I highly recommend you spend a moment with her very special family. There's something here for everyone!"
